  After doing a bit of research I was unable to find a decent sofa for under $300 as a gift for my daughter. However, we did find the Monterey Full Size Java Futon on Futonland. The quality of the futon is better than expected. As a sofa, it has a high back and is very comfortable. The price we paid includes the mattress upgrade (1 quality up). It was worth the extra money. I can't speak to it's comfort as a bed, but I believe it will do the job.
